Saul has emerged as a Liverpool transfer target following Giorgino Wijnaldum’s exit.
The Atletico Madrid star is widely regarded to be one of the game’s best box-to-box midfielders but struggled for form in Spain last season, despite the La Liga giants winning the title.
Saul was expected to head to Barcelona in a transfer that would see Antoine Griezmann move the other way.
But that deal has since broken down and it seems Liverpool are well and truly in the driving seat.
Reports in Spain suggest Liverpool have already tested Atletico Madrid’s resolve with an opening bid for the 26-year-old.
According to Diario Sport, Liverpool are even willing to offer one of two players in exchange for Saul, with Xherdan Shaqiri and Jordan Henderson touted as possible makeweights.
Shaqiri has struggled to cement his place in the Reds first team over the past few years while Henderson recently saw talks over a contract extension at Liverpool break down.
Saul is a self-proclaimed Liverpool supporter and spoke out about the Reds back in 2020.
Praising Jurgen Klopp’s style of football, Saul said: “It’s a different system and different players. They play more with a counter-attacking style with the three very good players up front and then those ‘perros de presa’ the ‘hunting dogs’ in midfield.”
He added: “They all run and press and they manage it so well because it’s not just running for the sake of running. It’s very well organised. If [Mohamed] Salah goes wide, then Henderson comes inside, if someone else goes inside, someone else goes outside.
“And maybe some people don’t rate Henderson as highly as [Georginio] Wijnaldum, (Naby) Keita or Fabinho but I think he is the one that brings that team together.

“Henderson does that so-called dirty work that Gabi [Fernandez] used to do for us, that I have to do, that Koke does. He is an example in so many facets of the game.”
It has not yet been confirmed whether Liverpool have officially made a bid for Saul or whether the midfielder would indeed be keen to leave Atletico Madrid for Anfield.
