Max Holloway receives more support in ‘best boxer’ debate with Conor McGregor

Legendary boxing trainer Teddy Atlas isn’t sure if anyone is a better striker in the UFC than perennial featherweight contender Max Holloway.

Holloway put on another excellent striking display against Yair Rodriguez last weekend to pick up his second win on the bounce.

The Hawaiian broke the record in his win against Calvin Kattar earlier this year for the most significant strikes landed in a UFC fight against Kattar at a staggering 445.

Atlas was in awe of Holloway’s performance against Rodriguez and has touted him as a better striker than the likes of UFC star Conor McGregor.

“Max Holloway is so special,” Atlas said on his YouTube channel.

“But the greatest advantage of why you know he was able to keep the edge in a fight [against Yair Rodriguez] and win the fight was that he could do so many other things.

“He is a great striker. I don’t know if anyone in the business is better. I know he’s not as good a puncher maybe as some of the greatest strikers out there.

“But as far as overall abilities in all the areas, I mean I don’t know if anyone can really match him when it comes to striking.

“He was doing everything [against Rodriguez] and that [striking] was the thing that carried the day.”

Holloway started the ‘best boxer’ debate in the UFC after screaming the claim midway through his fight with Kattar.

McGregor – who has been linked to a fight with Holloway upon his UFC return – recently reacted to a fan-made poster that ranked him as the third-best boxer in the UFC.

The Irishman’s former opponents Jose Aldo, Nate Diaz and Holloway were also on the list.

But McGregor claimed no one in the UFC comes close to his boxing abilities.

“I outboxed 3 guys on this list! There’s no one even remotely close to my boxing in the ufc. Even Dustin only got shots off post the leg damage,” he wrote.

“Everyone has been pucked around by me if we are going off boxing. [Petr] Yan is good tho, i like his style. I’d rip him up in that shell tho.”

Yan – who currently holds the UFC interim bantamweight title – reacted to McGregor’s claim by offering to fight him in boxing or MMA.

McGregor – who takes part in a wheelchair boxing fight next March – took up the Russian’s offer stating he would host “a spar or something similar” at the Crumlin Boxing Club.
