Man Utd transfer round-up: Frenkie de Jong timeline set as Marcus Rashford decision made

The clock is ticking for Manchester United to finally kick-off Erik ten Hag‘s reign with a new signing.

Although the summer transfer window has only officially been open for 10 days, the Red Devils’ Premier League rivals have been busy and the pressure is mounting on Ten Hag ahead of a seismic few months before the new season begins and the market shuts.

The 52-year-old is desperate to get a deal over the line for Frenkie de Jong, as United officials continue to thrash out a deal with Barcelona to bring the midfielder to Manchester – information made public thanks a leaked video of chief executive Richard Arnold speaking candidly to a group of disgruntled supporters at pub in Cheshire on Saturday. Meanwhile, the futures of multiple players already at the club are in flux, with updates on Eric Bailly and Marcus Rashford‘s contrasting situations.

Here’s the latest transfer news and gossip from Old Trafford.

De Jong timeline set

The Red Devils find themselves in a race against time to complete the signing of Erik ten Hag’s top target, Frenkie de Jong. United are keen to wrap up negotiations before the squad fly out to Bangkok to begin their pre-season tour on Friday, July 8.

The Telegraph report that the 25-year-old is central to the new Red Devils boss’ plans to implement a new style of play over the summer, as Ten Hag views De Jong as the future linchpin of his team. If a deal isn’t done by then, the Dutch tactician would find himself in an unfathomable position during pre-season training, unable to build around the playmaker.

Christian Eriksen is another player who Ten Hag wants to have settled into his side over the next few weeks, as De Telegraaf journalist Marcel van der Kraan affirmed how important the United manager’s first two signings are.

“Erik ten Hag doesn’t want any other players apart from those two first [De Jong and Eriksen],” Van der Kraan declared on Sky Sports. “Ten Hag says he’s seen the style of Barcelona and Ajax – if you want to play a certain attacking style, then you need Frenkie.”

Marcus Rashford looks set to stay at Old Trafford, despite speculation earlier in the summer that the academy graduate would be open to leaving his boyhood club. According to the Sun, Ten Hag wants to revive Rashford’s career and help him get back in Gareth Southgate’s England squad ahead of the World Cup in November.

Currently on holiday in the United States, the forward is believed to be working relentlessly in order to hit the ground running this summer and find his best form under the ex-Ajax boss. Goal add that Rashford wants to be Red Devils’ first-choice left-winger next season, at odds with reports which claimed Ten Hag viewed him as a backup striker to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Eric Bailly appears to be surplus to requirements this summer after six years at United. Mirror Football understands that Old Trafford chiefs have offered the Ivorian to Newcastle as an alternative to their top centre-back target, Sven Botman. The Magpies are struggling to sign the Lille defender, 22, but Ten Hag would be happy to let Bailly leave.

Having previously been linked with a reunion with Jose Mourinho – the man who brought him to Manchester – at Italian giants Roma, French sides Marseille and Lyon are also showing interest. It’d been reported that the would be willing to sell the former Villarreal defender for as little as £8.5 million, although United would ideally want around £20m.
