Jurgen Klopp gives Mohamed Salah contract update as he wins coveted Premier League award

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has admitted that his new deal could be an ‘important’ aspect in committing Mohamed Salah to a fresh deal at Anfield.

The forward is currently out of contract next summer, with suggestions that he could be set to leave Anfield. The Reds would of course be averse to losing the Egyptian considering his stunning form this season.

Salah was announced as Football Writers’ Association Football of the Year having netted 30 goals in all competitions so far this season. He is currently by far and away the leading scorer in the Premier League with 22 goals – closest challengers Son Heung-Min and Cristiano Ronaldo having just 17 to their name.

He has also been a real driving force behind the Reds’ push to complete an historic quadruple, with Liverpool still in the race to scoop the Premier League title, Champions League and FA Cup having already lifted the Carabao Cup earlier this season at Chelsea. Whilst questions remain over Salah’s future on Merseyside, boss Klopp has already committed his future to the Reds.

It was confirmed on Thursday that the German had extended his deal until the summer of 2026. It was originally thought that Klopp would depart in 2024 and he was asked whether that change of mind has provided a boost to his squad – and indeed the club’s hopes of agreeing a new deal with Salah.

Talking in a press conference, Klopp said: “That’s more of a question for the boys, to be honest. But it’s all fine, I really think they are both great. They have more things to think about than the management, but it’s an important thing.”

Salah has of course been probed on a number of occasions regarding his future, with him set to enter the final year of his current Reds deal. He has refused to comment though, instead choosing to remain focused on Liverpool’s end to the season.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports earlier this month, he said: “Honestly, what can I say? There are many things people don’t know about. I can’t be selfish now and talk about my situation.

“We are in the most important period for the team so I have to just talk about the team, focus on what’s coming and that’s the most important thing. That’s all I can say. Hopefully, we can be optimistic and see what’s going to happen.”

He continued: “For the team to win I can’t just go on the news and talk about my contract. I just focus on the team and that’s it.

“I talk to the manager from time to time, I’m very professional. I’m not bothered about contract talks. I’m just focusing on the team and giving everything for the club.”
