Inside Floyd Mayweather’s meeting with UFC boss ahead of potential return

Floyd Mayweather looks set to return to action in Japan after holding talks with the country’s mixed martial arts organisation Rizin.

Mayweather was pictured with the company’s CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara along with UFC president Dana White.

The former pound-for-pound No.1 previously fought in Japan when he KO’d kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in an exhibition bout as part of a Rizin fight card.

And Mayweather also held talks with White in 2019 after the pair had worked together in the build-up to Mayweather’s fight with UFC star Conor McGregor two years prior.

But Mayweather was only due to meet Sakakibara this week with White an unexpected addition to the party.

“When I was having a meeting with Mayweather, I was surprised when Dana appeared when I was told, ‘I have a guy who wants to see Sakakibara from now on, so I’ll call him by phone’,” Sakakibara tweeted.

“It’s been about 15 years since I met him again [but he is] one of the guys I wanted to meet back in the industry. Something may be born by chance!”

Mayweather’s stoppage win over McGregor was his 50th and final professional boxing fight but he is expected to return in a number of exhibition bouts this year.

A clash with YouTube star Logan Paul was pencilled in for February but has now been delayed indefinitely until crowds are allowed back into arenas.

“This year I will focus on several exhibitions,” Mayweather said earlier this year. “I will have an exhibition in Tokyo, Japan again.

“Of course the one with Logan Paul and and if Jake Paul can get past his next opponent Ben Askren, I will have an exhibition with him as well.

“I also heard that 50 Cent would fight me but claims I’m too small. If he wants to lace up at the end of the year, we can do an exhibition then. I don’t care about weight class with any of these guys.

“The Paul brothers will make great money with the events, but with 50 cent It has to be winner takes all.”
