Newcastle will have plenty of cash to splash in the upcoming window and they’re not wasting any time in identifying top targets.
It’s reported that the Magpies are interested in four Manchester United players currently on the fringes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
The Manchester Evening News claims that Newcastle, who are under new ownership after their Saudi-led takeover of £300million from former chairman Mike Ashley – making them the richest club in the world – are weighing up moves for Jesse Lingard, Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial and Eric Bailly.
Here’s how the Geordie club could line up if they were to sign the Old Trafford quartet.
Who are realistic targets for Newcastle United in January? Comment below
Martin Dubravka has been ruled out since the start of the season after undergoing foot surgery, but assuming everyone is fit, the Slovakian would take his place in goal.
Matt Ritchie has been one of Newcastle’s most consistent performers this season and will feature at left-back, with Javier Manquillo on the opposite side.
Bailly has been frozen out of the United side ever since Raphael Varane arrived at the club so it’s clear to see why he is one of the targets under the new regime on Tyneside.
Onto the midfield and Newcastle could be the perfect landing spot for Van de Beek to revive his career after a difficult spell at United.
He would slot in beside Joe Willock who signed from Arsenal in the summer and Jonjo Shelvey who would dictate play in front of the back four.
At the top end of the pitch, Allan Saint-Maximin has been a standout for Newcastle since he arrived at the club and would relish playing alongside players of a higher calibre. The Frenchman would be deployed on the right with Lingard on the opposite flank.
There were rumours the English playmaker was set to leave Man Utd in the summer after his successful loan spell at West Ham. That didn’t materialise, but speculation surrounding his future has continued as he has barely featured for Solskjaer this term.
Lingard has yet to agree on a contract extension and Newcastle are supposedly keen on orchestrating a deal for the attacker.
And he could lead the line for the Magpies if they get their wish and are able to sign the striker.
Possible Newcastle XI: Dubravka, Ritchie, Bailly, Tarkowski, Manquillo, Shelvey, Van de Beek, Willock, Lingard, Martial, Saint-Maximin.
