Cristiano Ronaldo clarifies Man Utd stance and opens up on “culture” under Ralf Rangnick

Cristiano Ronaldo has backed Ralf Rangnick to turn around Manchester United’s fortunes in the second half of the season.

United are yet to really click under Rangnick, who took charge on an interim basis after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November.

The German has won four, drawn two and lost one of his seven matches so far, but there has been slow progress in his efforts to change the style of play.

Ronaldo re-joined the club from Juventus in the summer to play under Solskjaer, and Rangnick’s arrival was widely viewed as being a challenge to the 36-year-old forward.

The Portuguese star believes it will take some more time for Rangnick to fully implement his ideas and that United can kick on in the coming months once that happens.

“I still believe we are capable of having a good season,” Ronaldo told Sky Sports .

“We know it’s going to take time to make the ideas of the new coach on the pitch. It’s not that fast, but looking forward we have to be professional, work hard, to be together as players.”

He added: “It’s not that easy to change the mentality of players and the system and the culture just like that, so I believe he [Rangnick] is going to do a good job.”

United are seventh in the Premier League, six points adrift of West Ham in fourth, albeit with two games in hand on the Hammers.

Rangnick’s side were beaten 1-0 by Wolves in their last league game 10 days ago, but will look to make it back-to-back wins over Aston Villa when they face Steven Gerrard’s side on Saturday.

For Ronaldo, it is all about changing the mentality of the players in order to bridge the gap to Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Asked whether they could close the gap on their rivals without the right mentality, Ronaldo said: “Impossible – I think it’s the main point.

“I don’t accept that our mentality be less than being in the top three in the Premier League.

“I think to build up good things, sometimes you have to destroy a few things. So why not – new year, new life and I hope that Manchester (United) can be the level that the fans want. They deserve that.

“We are capable of changing things now. I know the way but I’m not going to mention it here because I don’t think it’s ethical on my part to say that.

“What I can say is we can do better – all of us. Manchester (United) belongs to important things, so we have to change that.

“I don’t want to be here to be in sixth place, or seventh place, or fifth place. I’m here to try to win, to compete.

“I think we compete but we are not yet in our best level. But we have a long way to improve and I believe if we change our mind, we can achieve big things.”
